Maintenance Facility

At Huntsville Golf Club we are fortunate to have a wonderful maintenance facility located in a large turn of the century barn.  The barn is located on Hayfield road across the street from the Penn State Wilkes Barre campus.  The original sign on the front reads “Hayfield Barn #6” and was once part of “Hayfield Farm”.

“Hayfield Farm” was the country estate of John Nesbit Conyngham and his wife Bertha.  In 1910 John bought 550 acres that would operate as a fully functioning and self-sustaining farm.  On the farm John raised award winning Clydesdale horses as well as other interesting animals such as buffalo, Highland cattle, Chester White pigs, sheep, and Sardinian donkeys.  In addition to the livestock the farm also produced fruits, vegetables, corn and of course lots of hay.  In 1933 John built a grand and permanent manor house at Hayfield Farms at a cost of over one million dollars.

The house took many years to build and sadly John died a short time after its completion.  His wife Bertha who never shared John’s love of living in the country moved back to New York City.  In 1968 the Conyngham family deeded the manor and part of the farm to Penn State University.  The manor currently serves as administration offices and classrooms for the university.

In addition to our maintenance facility their are other buildings that were part of “Hayfield Farm” that are now part of Huntsville Golf Club.  The red brick house that is located next to the barn once housed employees working for “Hayfield Farm” and is now our administrative office.  The large barn complex behind the 12th green was also part of the farm.

In 1993 as the golf course was being constructed a large renovation project took place to convert Hayfield Barn #6 into our maintenance facility.  At the time it was still a working barn and was even home to a mean looking bull that needed to be relocated.  Once the renovation was complete, we were left with a fantastic maintenance facility that many golf courses would be envious of.  It includes a large well-furnished break room, men's and women's locker rooms with showers, men’s and women’s restrooms, offices for the superintendent, assistants and mechanics, an equipment repair area, a reel grinding room and part storage space.  There is also lots of unheated storage space to store our equipment fleet and fertilizers.

Here are some veiews of the inside;
